This is a fantastic read. I can't wait to revisit these songs. Not the greatest revelation , but I clearly remember the very first compact disc I ever bought was aPsychedelic Furs Greatest Hits compilation. Lest costly than replacing the albums with CDs. I must say, I am quite surprised to learn you've only met Richard Butler once. That seems practically impossible. Good stuff here, Lloyd!
Great post Lloyd. Last summer I sat in a quiet room and created 3 all-things-Butler-and-the-Furs compilations (old school CDs, disciplining me to just under 60 tracks) for a long car journey. A joy to make and a joy to hear on the road. A lot of this album features. Have you listened to their 2020 album Made Of Rain? It's a worthy addition to the canon. "You'll Be Mine" has a wonderful "All Tomorrow's Parties" feel. Thanks for this
the college/public radio station was always hard to pick up out in the boonies when i was growing up. desperate for new music, i used to go to the record store and choose albums by the cover, by the band name. this was the first one to really change my head. i remember we had to do a radio station project in french class; i played "into you like a train"; there were wide eyes, open mouths; oh, there goes mollie again. i never grow tired of it. oh also i have seen them play several times over the last ten years (going again in july.) still fucking brilliant. richard is the happiest person i have ever experienced live.
IMO Rundgren transformed and focused them musically on the next album which I know turned off many fans but to this day Forever Now is top 100 all time for me.
I bought this album in London during my first interrail trip in 1981, age 17. Still love it and can’t wait to put it on next thing now with this inspiration. We saw a bunch of great bands during our 2 weeks in London. Furs was not one of them unfortunately, but DAF, Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Siouxie and Banshees were not bad either.
I appreciate these reflective reads, and for myself I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the Furs thanks to taping from college radio to cassettes around 1986 then I went backwards collecting singles and albums. I missed chances to see them a bunch in late 80s 90s (almost got to the World Outside tour). Finally got lucky to be upfront with 30 or 40 others though when Love Spit Love did their club tour in ‘94 where the sax was replaced with a kazoo and megaphone on several songs, we finally saw in 2019 the proper band with James in Boston.

Still my favorite Furs album to this day. Love the review!
